Who Is the Barkitect?

Becky Valentine is the creator, writer, and curator of The Barkitect website, a modern blog about innovative pet-friendly design ideas.  Becky is passionate about pet-friendly design. So much so, she has built her career around it. As the Director of Design at BDA Architecture P.C., an award winning architectural firm that specializes in the design and construction of animal care facilities all around the world, Becky’s job is to create beautiful and functional spaces for people and pets to share.  Her project list includes: veterinary hospitals, animal shelters, pet resorts, guide dog facilities, and equine centers.  Becky is a regular speaker on the topic of building design for animals at several major veterinary conferences around the United States including North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC) and Veterinary Economics Hospital Design Conference (CVC).  Becky has a bachelor’s degree in Architecture, and a minor in Art & Design from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.  She currently lives in Albuquerque, NM with her two Great Danes, Vader & Vixen.


What is the Barkitect Website?

The Barkitect website is a blog about pet-friendly design ideas.  It’s a collection of innovative design concepts that are meant to encourage fellow pet owners to think outside the box when it comes to designing a home, or a room, or a space for both people and pets to share.  The goal of the Barkitect website is to inspire harmonious living amongst people and pets.  The Barkitect website has been featured in Modern Dog Magazine, Pawsh Magazine, and was a former member of Martha Stewart’s “Martha’s Circle.”

    Creating animal spaces that are artistic and intriguing. Probably creates the surprising effect of humanizing the space. Way to go Becky.
